RC Car Magazines Race Day Advice
RC car magazines that specialize in racing have many tips for running a winning race. Ironically, many RC car magazines contend that the key to winning is not in competition, but in practice. When you do your practice runs, it should be treated like a dress rehearsal; that is, as if you actually were racing.
If you get to the track early enough, you should be able to get at least three practice runs in. RC car magazines advise to not just go through the motions during practice. You should be looking for certain things. During your first practice run, you should learn the track’s layout. Use your worst battery pack for this run. During the first few minutes of practice, the track can be dirty. It is up to you to decide whether you want to run under those conditions.
During the second run, RC car magazines advise that you pay special attention to how your car handles. Unless you noticed something really wrong, do not change any of your settings. As well, avoid tuning the car while running on a dirty track. Once the second run is done, change what you think you need to change and go right back out to practice.
During the third run, you should be pretty comfortable with the track. Your focus should be mostly on the car. If you don’t think your car is performing up to snuff, don’t finish the run and take the car off the track. Make whatever changes are necessary to get it running well on that track and put it back out there. Make sure that you are comfortable with the final tweaks to the car, because you shouldn’t be making any more adjustments before the actual race starts.
What many professionals do is to set up the car as close to the final setup as possible, and then learn how to drive that setup. This method yields more consistent results than overhauling your setup between races in trying to find the perfect setup. When it comes right down to it, there really is no perfect setup. The winners make the most of a consistent setup.
